Mrs. Jynx Interview November 2, 2007

I got a rare chance to sit and talk with one of Electronica's best kept secrets. What ensued was a wonderful discussion ranging from me looking like an ass, to why MRS. Jynx is in love with American soap operas...

FaltyDL: Oi Mrs. Jynx!!! Thanks for taking the time to sit down with me here at this cafe in Istanbul.

Mrs. Jynx: I like the chairs...

F: Was it hard to get away from your crime-fighting day job to visit this wonderful country?

M: I am actually trailing a bond-style megalomaniac through this neck the woods anyway, so 2 birds with 1 stone....

F: So, I feel so lucky. I could fill a small ipod with tracks you have sent me in the past few weeks. Who else you share with these days?

M: Well, you could fill a large one with the stuff I haven't sent... but as for sharing, anyone that cares to ask for a track usually gets it - slut. But I would have to say, the main people I share my tracks with are my boyfriend, flatmate, fieldtriqp and wisp.

F: Right. Dirty dirty Jynx... It's quite a circle of talent circulating tracks in a circular fashion. Lot's of people in high places dig your tunes.

M: Thank you. I enjoy writing music and its a massive bonus to me if other people enjoy it!

F: Would it be fair to say Boards of Canada have been an influence on your sound? Who else might it be fair to say have influenced you?

W: um, maybe a little, but there are many other artists I am into more - uziq, gasman, frog pocket, aphex twin, girls aloud.. the list goes on... I like a lot of melodic sounding stuff. And when you say 'influenced' I would say it influences me to want to write music but i don't set out to emulate anyone. (threatens FaltyDL with a steak knife)

F: Fair enough. Your right. I was once asked if seeing a certain artist influenced me. I said yes, to go home and make some tunes, but not to sound like him. Do you think it can be hard to stand alone in modern electronic music?

M: I have never considered it, its not something I think about before sitting down to write something, but it depends what you have at your disposal. I think its maybe easy to be too individual sometimes and end up sounding utter bollocks. That was a hard question. I thought this was supposed to be a light interview!!

F: I know..hahah. Maybe we should take a whole other angle?

M: Yes!

F: Like back to Dawson's Creek, what's the attraction???!

M: Years ago, it used to be pacey, and these days.... its still pacey.

F: I knew it. I saw him in a movie once; he did a lot of drugs and had a few homosexual experiences. Not very WB like.

M: Yes, I think you'll find that was the film 'Cruel Intentions' also starring Sarah Michelle Gellar - of Buffy fame, which, incidentally, I prefer.

F: …ummm... what's good Manchesterian television?

M: Mancunian tv? well i spose its UK tv really, But Coronation street is hilariously good.

F: Mancunian sorry... What's that one about?

M: A street, that people live on and all sorts of things happen, its very very true to life.....

F: I can imagine. Sort of Melrose Place meets the feebles?

M: What the fuck are feebles?

F: Oh shit... Very early, if not the first Peter Jackson film (of Lord of the Rings fame), staring puppets, tackles the subjects of drugs war and sex. High-larious.

M: I see... no - coronation street is not like that.

F: haha, What are you listening to right now?

M: Right now? My fatemate yammering on about what to say in this interview.

Sorry flatmate.

F: Would you say you don't really know who you are until you have truly loved someone then hated them, and been in a fist fight?

M: Is that a serious question?

F: Yes.

M: I have never loved someone and then hated them, just hated them.

F: Although the fist fight does not have to have been with the same person.

M: So... pass

F: That's goin in the interview.

M: Ok, maybe, I can answer. My brother, I love him, have hated him and we used to punch the shit out of each other when we were younger.

F: Very good. My sister used to kick the shit out of me. Only when I deserved it though...I would provoke her.

Here's a serious question. Why is curry the most popular food in England at the moment. According to a British Life and Culture website.

M: Well, if you go to Akbars, Liverpool Street, Manchester, then you'll realize why I hated curry a year ago, since, going there, I love it.

F: Green, red, yellow, or masaman?

M: Brown?

F: ha! So the curry frenzy is not Thai based?

M: No, not really, Indian.

F: ok. This is
a. the best interview you have ever done.
b. the only interview you have ever done.
or c. a complete waste of your time.

M: All the above.

F: Please choose one of the above. Damn, beet me to it.

M: HAH! Hey, you'd better spellcheck it all.

F: Never.

M: Think my typing was very poor.

F: You want an accurate represention of yourself, no? Representation

M: I meant your spelling..... HAHAHAHAHAHA

F: whatever...Final quesion. Question haha! When you blow up to be a mega platinum star, will you still waste your time on ichat with me?

M: Of course not, I'll buy you a plane ticket over here : )

F: Wicked! ok thats it. I really am 24 btw.

M: Fuck off!

FaltyDL: That's it for this interview... I need to get out of this crazy country, the curry's givin me food poisoning...
